Today is Auckland Anniversary, a day the top half of the North Island celebrates by taking the day off.
Nelson have got on the bandwagon and are also enjoying the day off. The top of the South Island have the day off to celebrate Nelson Anniversary Day. Is anyone working today?

- The holiday usually falls on the Monday closest to 29 January, the anniversary of the arrival of William Hobson, in the Bay of Islands in 1840. (William Hobson later the first Governor of New Zealand)
